After a couple of nights stay in Aleppo, I headed down southeast to the ancient ruins of Palmyra. Palmyra, also referred to as Tadmor, was an important Assyrian caravan base and flourishing under Greek and then Roman rule before Queen Zenobia’s defeat to the latter brought it to and abrupt halt. The ruins set virtually in the middle of nowhere in the Syrian Desert alongside the cozy little town of Palmyra is one of Syria’s finest attractions.
The final stop on my Syrian odyssey was the capital city Damascus. Although by far Syria’s largest city, most of the attractions are located in or around the historic old city – which is where I stayed. The highlights of Damascus perhaps being the Umayyad Mosque, Saladin Mausoleum and the central souq. One exciting daytrip from Damascus is a visit to the enormous ancient Roman amphitheatre in Bosra. Located in the heart of a dusty old town, the locals must be commended for preserving this spectacular site. After Damascus, I made my way back into Syria to catch my flight to Cairo from Beirut, via a stopover in Baalbek.
