I was actually initially refused a Syrian visa at the embassy in Abu Dhabi as I did not possess a residency visa for the UAE at the time of travel. However, I was given tips from the lonely planet thorn tree that it was possible to obtain a visa upon arrival at Syria’s southern border. Although it took a while to convince the ticket lady at the Tripoli bus station this, I was eventually allowed on a northbound bus for Aleppo, with an agreement that I would disembark at the Lebanese border post. This was fine as my plan for the day was to spend a night in Hama, via a stopover at the spectacular crusader castle Krak De Chevaliers. Fortunately, I didn’t have too many problems at the Syrian border getting my visa before hitching a ride to the castle and onto Hama. After Hama, I made my way north to Aleppo.
