J Neo Marvin & the Content Providers |
Canvas
Cafe August 6, 2003 |
| Located on the fringe of Golden Gate Park, the Canvas Cafe is
often heralded as a rare example of gentrification done right in San Francisco.
It is a place where bourgeoisie art connoisseurs can observe the paintings for
sale decorating the walls of the cafe while hearing beatnik poetry or local SF
musicians express themselves while sipping a nice cup of coffee, beer or wine.
So it was with great pleasure that the Content Providers often to perform as
the feature act at the Canvas's distinguished Wednesday night open mic.

The band was pleased to welcome back Michael
Walsh on percussion and tore through a set similar to that of the Sacred
Grounds four days previously. Tracks from the 1st Content Providers CD
Slowly I Turned mixed in exquisitely with a cover of the Mountain Goats
"Twin Human Highway Flares" and two songs off of What Is Truth?: "Take
Me By Surprise" and "(Formerly) Boomtown". The latter ironically about all the
things gone wrong with gentrification in San Francisco, notably the
dotcom boom that was here only yesterday. |
| Unfortunately the acoustics of the Canvas Cafe
and the sound mix did not do justice to the superlative effort put forward by
every band member. Still, while the sound quality may have been a little
precarious, the band itself was faultless. Opener "Soft Shoulder", the
pulsating flamenco crescendo of "Running Up A Tab On The Universe" and the
solar (as our Italian keyboardist Franco likes to put it) "vagabond"
were probably the highlights of the show. The fierce closer "Shouting Fire in a
Crowded Theatre" was also amongst the standouts. |
